Assisi (Santa Maria degli Angeli, below the town). The station sits 4 km below in Santa Maria degli Angeli: the C-line city bus meets most trains and climbs to the walls in about 15 minutes; a taxi does it in 8.

Inside the walls Assisi is entirely on foot, and steeply so: the Basilica sits at one end, the Rocca above, and everything between is a slope. The city bus matters only for the station hop and the sanctuary sites in the plain

On foot
- ·Plan the town top-down: bus or taxi to Porta Nuova, walk downhill through the lanes to the Basilica, and the climbs stay optional
- ·The Eremo delle Carceri hermitage walk above town is the quiet counterweight to the Basilica crowds, an hour up through the woods
