Arriving

Pompei Scavi - Villa dei Misteri (Circumvesuviana). The Circumvesuviana halt sits at the excavation's main gate: trains from Naples take about 35 minutes, from Sorrento 30. Trenitalia's separate Pompei station (Naples-Salerno line) serves the modern town, a 10 minute walk from the other entrance.

Everything a visitor needs sits between the two stations and the site gates on foot; the modern town's sanctuary and restaurants are a flat 15 minute walk from the ruins

Circumvesuviana tickets at the station or EAV app; band fares are modest, and queues at Pompei Scavi peak at closing time.

On foot

• ·The excavation itself is the walk: 66 hectares of Roman streets, plan 3-4 hours minimum with water and a hat, shade is archaeological
• ·Enter at the quieter Piazza Anfiteatro gate (near the Trenitalia side) to walk against the main flow from Porta Marina

Taxis and driving

• ·Ranks outside both stations; useful for combining with Vesuvius, whose shuttle buses also leave from Pompei Scavi
• ·Parking lots near the gates are private and pushy; the train is simpler from either Naples or Sorrento, which is exactly how the site is designed to be visited
