La Spezia Centrale. The Cinque Terre railhead: nearly every visit to the villages starts here. Direct Intercity and regional trains from Pisa, Genoa, Milan and Rome; the town centre is a 10 minute downhill walk.

Most visitors only ever walk between the station, the centre and the waterfront; buses matter for the Portovenere corniche (line P) more than for town.
On foot
- ·Station to the palm lined waterfront is about 15 minutes downhill through the pedestrian Via del Prione
- ·For the villages themselves, the Cinque Terre Express train from Centrale is the tool: 5 to 10 minutes per hop, band priced by season, fares on Trenitalia
Taxis and driving
- ·Do not drive into the Cinque Terre villages; leave the car in La Spezia's garages and take the train, it is faster and the village roads close in season anyway
