Matera Centrale (FAL). Matera is NOT on the national rail network: the private Ferrovie Appulo Lucane line links it to Bari Centrale (own platforms beside the Trenitalia station) in about 90 minutes for a few euros, roughly hourly, not on Sundays. From the FAL station the Sassi rim is a 15 minute walk.

Inside Matera you walk: the Sassi districts are stairs, ramps and lanes where buses cannot go. City buses matter only for the Murgia belvedere across the ravine and the modern town's edges

On foot
- ·The Sassi are a workout dressed as a stroll: constant stairs, uneven stone, and worth every step. Good shoes are non-negotiable
- ·Cross the ravine on the Tibetan-style footbridge for the cave-church viewpoint that made the town famous; allow a half day and water
Taxis and driving
- ·A small local fleet, best booked by phone through your hotel; drivers know the few points where cars can actually reach the Sassi
- ·The Sassi are closed to cars and the approach ZTLs are camera-enforced; park in the modern town (Via Saragat or Piazza della Visitazione area) and walk down into the stone city
