Arriving
Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi). Metro Line 1 and the Circumvesuviana both leave from underneath the station; the Garibaldi square outside is chaotic but the connections are excellent.

Metro Line 1 single €1.50: one metro ride; buses and trolleybuses use a separate 1.30 ticket.
Metro Line 1 (the art stations) links Centrale, the old centre and Vomero; four funiculars climb the hill and are an attraction in their own right.
Tabaccherie, station machines and the Unico Campania app; grab a couple of spares, machines are often out of service.
Stamp everything: turnstiles for the metro, yellow boxes on buses and the funiculars; inspections cluster at the tourist stations.
The old centre is dense and walkable, so most days need only a couple of rides; think in single tickets unless you are criss-crossing to Vomero and the port all day.
On foot
- ·Spaccanapoli and the old centre are best on foot, and half the streets are too narrow for anything else; watch the scooters, they follow their own rules
- ·Naples is hillier than it looks: the funiculars exist because the climb to Vomero is real
Taxis and driving
- ·Use official white taxis and ask for the fixed zone fare (tariffa predeterminata), which the driver must honour; meters mysteriously fail for tourists otherwise
- ·Do not drive in Naples: ZTLs, scooters and creative local customs make it the hardest city driving in Italy, and day trips (Pompeii, Sorrento, the coast) are all easier by train or ferry anyway
