Three metro lines (A, B, C); A and B cover most sights and cross at Termini.
Tabaccherie and newsstands, station machines, transport apps, or simply tap a contactless card at the metro gates and on board (Tap&Go).
Stamp paper tickets at the metro gate or the yellow machines on buses and trams; riding unvalidated means a fine, and inspectors do check.
A pass pays off from about three rides a day; most of the historic centre is genuinely walkable, so many visitors need fewer than they expect.
On foot
- ·The centre is compact: Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona sit minutes apart on foot, closer than the metro map suggests
- ·Sampietrini cobbles are hard on thin soles and wheeled luggage; comfortable shoes matter more than any transit pass
- ·Metro stops ring the historic centre rather than crossing it, so plan the centre on foot and use the metro to reach it
Taxis and driving
- ·Use licensed white taxis from official ranks or by app; hailing on the street rarely works
- ·Standard ride-hailing is limited in Rome (no regular Uber, only the pricier Uber Black); taxis are the practical option
- ·Airport runs are fixed-fare; in town the meter applies, and hotel staff can call a cab reliably
- ·The historic centre is a camera-enforced limited traffic zone (ZTL); do not drive a rental into the centre, the fines arrive months later by post
